Do You Need a Referral for an ADHD Evaluation?

August 5, 2026 · 3 min read

One of the most common questions before booking an ADHD evaluation is whether you need a referral from your primary care doctor first. In most cases, the answer is no.

When a referral typically isn’t required

Most commercial insurance plans allow direct access to behavioral health providers, including ADHD evaluations, without a referral. This is different from some specialist visits (like certain surgical specialties) where a referral is a plan requirement.

When it might matter

  • Certain HMO plans that require referrals for all specialist care, not just ADHD-specific
  • If you want your primary care provider looped in for continuity of care — not required, but sometimes helpful
  • If you’re seeking accommodations that specifically require primary care documentation alongside a specialist diagnosis

These are the exception, not the rule. For most patients with commercial insurance, you can book an evaluation directly.

PPO vs. HMO, in plain terms

PPO plans generally allow you to see any in-network specialist without a referral — this covers most of our patients. HMO plans more often require a referral for any specialist visit, ADHD-related or not, as a condition of the plan itself, not something specific to behavioral health. If you’re not sure which type of plan you have, your insurance card or member portal will usually say.

What happens if a referral turns out to be required

If your specific plan does require one, it’s a quick step — a call or message to your primary care provider requesting a referral for a behavioral health evaluation. It doesn’t require an in-person visit with them first in most cases, and it shouldn’t meaningfully delay your evaluation once it’s confirmed you need it.

How to know for sure

Rather than guessing based on general plan type, we verify your specific insurance before your visit — which confirms whether a referral applies to your plan, along with your expected cost.

What if your employer also requires documentation?

A referral requirement from your insurance plan and documentation requirements from an employer are two separate things, and meeting one doesn’t automatically satisfy the other. If you’ll eventually need workplace accommodation paperwork too, it’s worth mentioning at booking so your evaluation can address both at once. If you’re ever unsure which category your plan falls into, your insurance card usually lists the plan type directly, or a quick call to the number on the back will confirm it.
