What to Expect at Your First ADHD Medication Appointment

August 4, 2026 · 2 min read

Not knowing what to expect keeps a lot of people from booking their first ADHD medication appointment. Here’s what actually happens, so there are no surprises.

Before your appointment

You’ll typically complete some intake questions ahead of time — your symptom history, any past diagnoses, current medications, and relevant family or medical history. This isn’t busywork: it’s what lets your provider make a safe, informed recommendation instead of guessing.

During the appointment

  • A review of your ADHD symptoms and how they show up across work, relationships, and daily life
  • A discussion of your health history, including anything that might rule certain medications in or out
  • An explanation of the options that make sense for you specifically — not a one-size-fits-all recommendation
  • Time for your questions about side effects, timelines, and what to expect

If medication is a good fit, your provider will typically start at a conservative dose and plan a follow-up to see how you’re responding — this is standard practice, not a sign that something’s wrong.

What happens after

Most providers schedule a follow-up within a few weeks of starting a new medication to check in on effectiveness and side effects. This is when dose adjustments usually happen. Medication management is a process, not a single decision made once and never revisited.

Booking your first visit

If you haven’t been formally evaluated yet, that typically comes first — a free 2-minute screening is a good place to start, and we verify insurance before your visit so there are no surprise costs.
